The name comes from 'double roti', the everyday Hyderabadi word for bread, usually explained by the way the loaf doubles in size as it rises.

Slices of bread are deep-fried in ghee until golden, then soaked in a sugar syrup scented with cardamom, saffron, and kewra water, and layered with rich rabri and toasted nuts. It's a fixture of Hyderabadi wedding feasts and Eid spreads, sold hot from big trays during festival season.

Why it's made this way: The dessert reworks the Mughal-era shahi tukda into a Nizami classic with local saffron and kewra flavoring, cementing its place at Hyderabad's biggest celebratory tables.
