Misrata's date harvest is routinely singled out as among the finest anywhere, sold fresh, sun-dried, and pressed into syrup all from the same market stalls.

Misrata's palm groves produce dates prized across Libya, sold piled high in the city's markets in their fresh, semi-dried and fully dried forms, and eaten plain, stuffed with almonds, or reduced into date syrup used throughout Libyan cooking.

Why it's made this way: Misrata's coastal oases have long made it one of Libya's premier date-growing regions, and the fruit anchors both the local economy and the city's everyday hospitality — a plate of dates is the customary way to welcome a guest.
