It is listed on the Dutch national inventory of intangible cultural heritage, and Brabant runs an annual competition to crown the province's best worstenbroodje baker.

A seasoned minced-meat sausage, usually pork or a pork-beef mix, is wrapped in a soft white bread dough, not puff pastry, and baked until golden, then sold warm from the bakery counter. It's a fixture of markets and bakeries across Noord-Brabant, eaten as a handheld snack any time of day.

Why it's made this way: It has long been part of Brabant's winter baking, and it is tied to Christmas and Carnival traditions across the province.
