Schiedam once had so many jenever distilleries running around the clock that soot from their furnaces earned the city the nickname 'Black Nazareth.'
Jenever is a juniper-flavored spirit and the ancestor of modern gin, historically distilled from malt wine. It's traditionally served ice-cold in a small tulip glass, filled right to the brim.
Why it's made this way: The town of Schiedam in Zuid-Holland became the world's jenever capital by the 18th century, once home to hundreds of distilleries and windmills built specifically to grind grain for the spirit.
