The woven coconut-leaf pouch isn't just a wrapper — raw rice is packed inside and boiled right in the leaf, so the pouch itself is the cooking vessel.

Raw rice is packed into a pouch hand-woven from young coconut leaves, then boiled until the grains fuse into a dense, portable block shaped like a diamond or a heart. Vendors string dozens up along a pole at grilling stalls, where diners grab one to go with their skewered meat.

Why it's made this way: The woven pouch let market vendors and laborers carry a pre-portioned, mess-free serving of rice without a plate or utensils, which is why it became the default side at Cebu's grilled-meat stalls, most famously along Larsian's row of grills.
