Serbia's national spirit has an entire geographic indication protecting the name of just one district's plum brandy — Šumadija's.
Šljivovica is Serbia's iconic plum brandy, and Šumadija, one of the country's great plum-growing districts, is widely considered its historic heartland. It's traditionally offered as a welcome shot before meals and celebrations.
Why it's made this way: Šumadija's rolling orchard hills produce the plum varieties most associated with classic, high-quality šljivovica, anchoring the drink to this one district.
