Kassala's fruit market is so vast it spans many city blocks, and locals credit it as the reason the city's produce — especially its mangoes — has a reputation as the best in the country.
Vendors in Kassala's sprawling central market pile up mountains of mangoes, oranges, and grapefruit grown in the fertile land along the Gash River, slicing and selling them fresh as an everyday street snack rather than a home-only fruit.
Why it's made this way: The seasonal floodplain of the Gash River gives Kassala unusually fertile soil for a semi-arid region, turning fruit-growing into one of the area's defining industries — and its market into one of the most famous produce markets in Sudan.
