Fendant takes its name from the French word for 'splitting' — because the grape's skin visibly splits open under a light press of the fingers when fully ripe.
Fendant is a light, floral white wine made from the Chasselas grape grown on the sun-soaked slopes of Valais. It's the classic pairing for regional dishes like raclette and cheese fondue.
Why it's made this way: The Fendant name has been legally protected in Valais since 1966 and refers exclusively to Chasselas wine grown in the canton, making it one of the most tightly regional wine names in Switzerland.
