Two Mission taquerias claim the style: El Faro, which says it made the first oversized burrito in 1961, and La Cumbre, which says it did so in 1969.

A steamed, oversized flour tortilla is packed with rice, beans, meat, salsa, sour cream, and cheese, rolled into a tight cylinder, and wrapped whole in foil to eat by hand. Taquerias throughout San Francisco's Mission District have served it this way since the 1960s.

Why it's made this way: The Mission District's Mexican immigrant taquerias developed this all-in-one, foil-wrapped format as a filling, portable meal, and it's since spread nationwide as its own recognized burrito style.
