Jim's Original sat at the corner of Halsted and Maxwell for decades until the University of Illinois Chicago's campus expansion forced it to move in 2005.
A grilled or fried Polish sausage in a bun, smothered in grilled onions, yellow mustard and whole sport peppers, sold from walk-up stands that stay open late.
Why it's made this way: It was born at the old Maxwell Street market on Chicago's Near West Side, where Macedonian immigrant Jimmy Stefanovic took over his aunt and uncle's hot dog stand in 1939.
