It is called 'Italian' after the Portland Italian immigrants who created it, not because of its ingredients.
A soft long roll filled with ham, American cheese, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, pickles and olives, drizzled with oil; sold at sandwich shops and convenience-store counters.
Why it's made this way: Italian immigrants Giovanni and Michillina Amato sold bread to Portland dockworkers from 1902 and began filling the rolls with ham, cheese and vegetables around 1910.
