Their red color is just dye, and ahead of the US ban on Red Dye No. 3 the main maker began switching to natural coloring.
A bright red beef-and-pork hot dog in a natural casing that snaps when you bite it, served at hot dog stands and snack bars across the state.
Why it's made this way: W.A. Bean & Sons of Bangor, a six-generation family business, is the last Maine company making them, and they turn up at fairs, bean suppers and roadside stands statewide.
