Maine named it the official state treat in 2011, separate from its official state dessert, blueberry pie.
Two soft, dome-shaped chocolate cakes sandwiching a thick fluffy cream filling, sold individually at bakeries, farm stands and general stores.
Why it's made this way: Labadie's Bakery in Lewiston says it has made whoopie pies since 1925, though Pennsylvania's Amish country also claims the treat.
