Despite the name, Detroit's coney dogs have nothing to do with New York's Coney Island — Greek and Macedonian immigrant diner owners named their shops 'Coney Island' as a generic Americana label.
A natural-casing hot dog is topped with a loose, cumin-spiced beef chili, yellow mustard, and chopped raw onion, all served in a soft steamed bun. Round-the-clock coney island diners across metro Detroit serve them by the pair.
Why it's made this way: Detroit's early-1900s Greek and Macedonian immigrant diner owners built the coney island genre here, and rival families American and Lafayette Coney Island still compete blocks apart downtown.
