Detroit's coney dogs aren't a New York dish — Greek and Macedonian immigrants borrowed the name of Brooklyn's Coney Island, famous for hot dogs, and built their own chili-topped style under it.

A natural-casing hot dog is topped with a loose, cumin-spiced beef chili, yellow mustard, and chopped raw onion, all served in a soft steamed bun. Round-the-clock coney island diners across metro Detroit serve them by the pair.

Why it's made this way: Detroit's early-1900s Greek and Macedonian immigrant diner owners built the coney island genre here, and rival diners American and Lafayette Coney Island still compete from next-door buildings downtown.
