Hamtramck, the Polish-American enclave inside Detroit, throws an entire 'Paczki Day' street festival every Fat Tuesday, with bakeries often selling out by mid-morning.

A rich, egg-and-butter yeast dough is deep-fried into a dense, oversized doughnut, then filled with fruit preserves or custard and dusted with powdered sugar. Detroit-area Polish bakeries only make them in the days leading up to Fat Tuesday, when lines stretch out the door.

Why it's made this way: Polish immigrants settled Hamtramck and other Detroit neighborhoods in the early 1900s and kept the pre-Lenten paczki tradition alive as a citywide street celebration.
