Michigan has its own Pasty Day: Governor George Romney proclaimed May 24 Michigan Pasty Day in 1968.
A half-moon pastry is filled with diced beef, potato, onion, and rutabaga, then baked until golden. Roadside bakeries across Michigan's Upper Peninsula sell them hot, wrapped in paper to eat on the road.
Why it's made this way: Cornish immigrants who came to work the Upper Peninsula's copper and iron mines in the 1800s brought the pasty, and it remains the region's signature handheld food.
