It was invented in Oregon in 1939, when a rainy weekend spoiled a hot dog stand's buns and the owners battered the franks instead.
A hot dog dipped in a less-sweet batter than a corn dog, deep-fried on a stick and eaten with mustard while walking the fairgrounds.
Why it's made this way: It has been sold at the Minnesota State Fair since 1947, where it became one of the fair's best-known foods on a stick.
