Tom Thumb Donuts says it was the first in the country to make mini donuts, launching them at the Minnesota State Fair in 1949.
Bite-size cake donuts dropped from a machine into hot oil, tossed in cinnamon sugar and sold by the paper bag from fair stands where you can watch them being made.
Why it's made this way: John and Jan Desmond of the Twin Cities created the Tom Thumb mini donut for the Minnesota State Fair in 1949, and mini donuts have been a fixture of the fair in St. Paul ever since.
