Mayor Ed Rendell made the hoagie the Official Sandwich of Philadelphia in 1992.
A long Italian roll stuffed with cold cuts, provolone, lettuce, tomato and onion, dressed with oil and oregano; made to order at delis and corner shops.
Why it's made this way: Philadelphia's favorite origin story credits Italian-American workers at the World War I Hog Island shipyard, though historians note the name appears in print only much later.
