It is the Philadelphia name for Italian ice, and locals famously pronounce it 'wooder ice'.
A smooth, spoonable frozen fruit ice sold in paper cups from neighborhood walk-up stands, often layered with soft-serve.
Why it's made this way: Italian immigrants brought Sicilian granita to South Philadelphia and sold it from carts in the early 1900s; it grew into the city's signature summer treat.
