The brand was actually founded in Bulawayo in 1930 by settler Arthur Sturgess, who named it for the Mazowe Valley oranges north of Harare and reportedly left the final naming decision to his wife.
This concentrated orange cordial, diluted with still or sparkling water, has been a Zimbabwean household staple since 1930. It's made using real orange juice sourced from citrus estates in the Mazowe Valley just north of Harare, and sold everywhere from supermarkets to roadside tuck shops.
Why it's made this way: For generations of Zimbabweans at home and abroad, Mazoe is less a soft drink than a taste of home — surveys of consumers repeatedly find its appeal rooted in nostalgia as much as in flavour.
