Nhopi

Photo coming soon

Depending on the sweetness of the pumpkin used, nhopi can taste almost like a dessert, even though it's eaten as an everyday breakfast or snack, never as pudding.

Nhopi is a thick, almost custardy porridge made by boiling cubed pumpkin with mealie meal and stirring in peanut butter until smooth. It's sold at markets and made at home across the Shona-speaking Karanga heartland around Masvingo, doubling as a hearty breakfast or filling snack.

Why it's made this way: As an 'indigenous porridge,' nhopi has drawn renewed attention in Zimbabwe's drier regions as a nutritious, drought-resilient meal that leans on pumpkin rather than relying solely on maize.
