The Triangle and Hippo Valley estates near Chiredzi, first planted with cane in 1931, still supply roughly 80% of Zimbabwe's entire sugar crop.
Grown on the vast irrigated estates of Triangle and Hippo Valley in Masvingo province's low-lying Chiredzi district, raw sugar cane is cut into hand-length sticks, peeled with a knife, and chewed for its sweet juice — a favourite roadside and market snack across the Lowveld.
Why it's made this way: Living next to some of the country's largest sugar estates means raw cane is one of the most literal 'farm to street' snacks anywhere in Zimbabwe, sold within sight of the fields it grew in.
