Trout sells for roughly US$15 per kilogram in Zimbabwe, several times the price of common bream — a genuine luxury item by local standards.
The cool mountain streams and dams of Nyanga, in Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands, are the only place in the country cold enough to farm rainbow trout at scale. Lodges around Nyanga pan-fry or grill it fresh, and visitors can fish for their own catch at government-run trout dams inside Nyanga National Park.
Why it's made this way: Trout farming took root here because Nyanga's cool winters mimic the fish's native cold-water habitat, a rare climatic quirk that makes trout a distinctly Eastern Highlands specialty rather than a nationwide dish.
