This clear cherry liqueur was invented by monks in Zadar and became so prized that Napoleon reportedly had it imported for his own table.
Maraschino is a clear, dry liqueur distilled from Marasca cherries, a bitter cherry variety that grows wild along the Dalmatian coast. First made by Dominican monks in the 16th century, it launched Zadar into centuries as the liqueur capital of the Adriatic.
