Astra

Astra's brewing roots in St. Pauli trace back to 1647, but the beer only got its punchy anchor-and-star logo and its rebellious, red-light-district identity in the 20th century — today it's as tied to Hamburg's FC St. Pauli football club as to the beer itself.

Astra is a crisp, straightforward pilsner-style lager brewed in Hamburg's St. Pauli district, sold in its distinctive stubby bottle stamped with an anchor. It's the beer of choice on the Reeperbahn and in the stands at FC St. Pauli matches, drunk cold and unfussy.

Why it's made this way: Brewed in St. Pauli since the 17th century and closely woven into the neighborhood's dockworker and nightlife culture, Astra is as much a symbol of working-class Hamburg identity as it is a beer brand.
