The brewery likes to point out that Goethe drank Köstritzer black beer during an illness when he could barely eat, a story it still uses in its marketing.
Köstritzer Schwarzbier is a dark, almost black German lager that looks like a stout but drinks light and smooth, with roasted malt flavor and none of the heaviness the color suggests. It's served cold in a tall glass with a thick tan head, brewed in the small Thuringian town of Bad Köstritz since 1543.
Why it's made this way: The style was perfected in Bad Köstritz, Thuringia, where the brewery long operated under the patronage of the local Reuss princes and turned a local dark brew into Germany's benchmark black lager.
