Vetkoek

Vetkoek means "fat cake" in Afrikaans, but in Namibia it usually shows up savory — split open and stuffed with mince rather than eaten sweet.

Vetkoek are balls of dough deep-fried until golden and hollow inside, then split open and filled with minced meat, curry, or cheese, or eaten plain with butter and jam. They're sold everywhere from Windhoek street corners to school tuck shops, often paired with kapana for a full meal.

Why it's made this way: Deep-frying dough needs little more than flour, yeast, and hot oil, making vetkoek one of the cheapest hot foods a vendor can offer, and it's a common partner to kapana at Namibian markets.
