Venda Ferment · Marula Season

Marula Beer (Mukumbi)

Photo coming soon

Marula fruit contains roughly twice the vitamin C of an orange, so the fruit that becomes mukumbi starts out as one of the most vitamin-rich wild fruits in the region.

A mildly alcoholic beer fermented from the juice of ripe marula fruit, traditionally squeezed out by hand and left to ferment for several days to weeks. Whole villages gather to brew and drink it communally each year when the marula trees ripen between January and March.

Why it's made this way: In Venda tradition, elders and traditional leaders taste the season's first marula beer and give the signal for brewing to begin, a custom that ties the drink closely to community structure and seasonal celebration.
