Thophi

🎃
Photo coming soon

Depending on the household, thophi swings from a savoury side dish to an almost dessert-like sweet porridge, made from the same base ingredients just adjusted in sweetness.

A soft, mildly sweet porridge made by simmering pumpkin or green squash into maize meal until thick and smooth, sometimes finished with a touch of sugar. Venda households serve it as a breakfast or side dish, ladled hot from the pot.

Why it's made this way: Thophi is part of a wider Limpopo family of squash-and-maize porridges — related dishes go by different names in neighbouring communities — and remains an important marker of Venda culinary identity.
