Shisa Nyama

Some of Soweto's most famous shisa nyama venues, like Chaf Pozi, sit directly beneath the city's iconic cooling towers, turning a former apartheid-era industrial landmark into a weekend party backdrop.
A 'buy-and-braai' ritual where customers choose raw meat — boerewors, chops, steak, chicken — from an on-site butchery counter and have it grilled over open coals to order, eaten communally with pap, chakalaka and beer.
Why it's made this way: The Zulu term literally means 'burn the meat', and the format grew out of township braai culture as a social leveller — a shisa nyama draws people from every walk of life to the same fire.
