Walkie Talkies

Chicken feet are genuinely nutrient-dense — high in protein and collagen and low in kilojoules — which has helped walkie talkies gain attention well beyond their humble township origins.

Chicken feet and heads, scalded to loosen the skin, seasoned heavily with curry powder, turmeric and chilli, then grilled, fried or stewed until tender. Township vendors sell them by the portion alongside pap, often straight from a braai drum.

Why it's made this way: The playful name — legs ('walkie') plus heads ('talkie') — turned an offcut into a beloved, affordable protein, and the dish has become one of the most recognisable icons of Johannesburg and Soweto street food.
